This act of torturing and murdering Roma is also known as &lsquo;<i>Samudaripen<\/i>&rsquo; in the Romani language. Thus, 2<sup>nd<\/sup> of August (International Roma Genocide Remembrance Day) and 16<sup>th<\/sup> of May (Romani Resistance Day) are dates when Roma remember the &lsquo;<i>Samudaripen<\/i>&rsquo;. Although recognized by various European states, the Romani Genocide remains often a forgotten act when the World and Europe remember the Second World War Genocide. Recognition and remembrance of the dark European history is necessary to prevent such mass massacres being repeated; therefore, <b>I will briefly elaborate on the path which led to the inhuman extermination of Roma during World War Two<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"margin-top:8.0pt; margin-right:5.6pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin-left:5.0pt; text-align:justify; margin:0in\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">By indicating the place of Roma during the nation-building process in Europe, I aim to explain the reasons <b>why Roma were viewed by the Nazis as population which should be &ldquo;<i>cleaned from the face of the earth<\/i>&rdquo;<\/b>. I chose to explain the Nazi idea of killing people who did not fit their hegemonic nations because of the danger that such ideas might be awakened in <span style=\"letter-spacing:-.05pt\">contemporary<\/span> Europe, when the Extreme Right-Wing parties expand more and more. Additionally, the position of Roma as &ldquo;<i>the others<\/i>&rdquo; did not change much, which means that remembering the traumatic Romani history is key for bringing awareness among the non-Roma power holders.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"margin-top:8.15pt; margin-right:5.75pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin-left:5.0pt; text-align:justify; margin:0in\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">To begin, I am bringing <b>the metaphor of the &ldquo;<i>house<\/i>&rdquo; <\/b>to illustrate the nation-building process in Europe in the twentieth century. Let&rsquo;s imagine the nation-state as a &ldquo;<i>house<\/i>&rdquo; (&ldquo;<i>shelter<\/i>&rdquo; after the &ldquo;<i>storm<\/i>&rdquo;). The &ldquo;<i>storm<\/i>&rdquo; (instability and chaos brought by the wars) made Europeans shelter themselves. Some peoples had land and more resources for building their &ldquo;<i>houses<\/i>&rdquo; than others. Some peoples were more homogenic, so building &ldquo;<i>houses<\/i>&rdquo; was easier for them than for other more diverse groups. All &ldquo;houses&rdquo; had to be built fast (being &ldquo;<i>homeless<\/i>&rdquo; in a &ldquo;<i>storm<\/i>&rdquo; is dangerous), so hegemony was unavoidable. The more one group was uniformed, the faster the &ldquo;house&rdquo; would be built.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"margin-top:4.0pt; margin-right:5.75pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin-left:5.0pt; text-align:justify; margin:0in\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\">Now, let&rsquo;s locate <b>the place of Roma during the construction of the &ldquo;<i>houses<\/i>&rdquo;<\/b>. Roma were living on the territories where the &ldquo;<i>houses<\/i>&rdquo; were being built. They did not take part in<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"> deciding what the &ldquo;<i>houses<\/i>&rdquo; would look like, and what the domestic rules would be. Additionally, not all the &ldquo;<i>houses<\/i>&rdquo; were open to Roma for cohabitation. While some &ldquo;<i>households<\/i>&rdquo; let the Roma live with them (but only outside, in the &ldquo;<i>gardens<\/i>&rdquo;), others let them live with them (but only by the rules that Roma never agreed on).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"WordSection2\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:7.8pt; margin-right:5.65pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin-left:5.0pt; text-align:justify; margin:0in\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><b><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\">Why is the place of Roma in the nation-building process in Europe in the 20<\/span><\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"font-size:8.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"position:relative\"><span style=\"top:-4.0pt\">th <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\">century important? <\/span><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\">Let me illustrate my answer using Hannah Arendt&rsquo;s &lsquo;<i>Origin of Totalitarianism<\/i>&rsquo; and the concept of <i>statelessness<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:7.95pt; margin-right:5.75pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin-left:5.0pt; text-align:justify; margin:0in\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\">Namely, Arendt examines the <i>nation-building <\/i>process in the twentieth century and its link with <i>Imperialism <\/i>and <i>Totalitarianism<\/i>. She introduces the concept of <i>stateless people <\/i>which might indicate <b>the inferior position of Roma in the European empires and later in the nation-states<\/b>. <b>That relation culminated with the Genocide during World War Two<\/b>. <i>Stateless <\/i>were the peoples who did not fit the nation. Arendt calls them &ldquo;<i>peoples without history<\/i>&rdquo;. The nations consisted of people who had common history. The trajectory imperialism-nationalism- totalitarianism was fatal for Roma. In all three stages of development of the European states, Roma were constantly on the margins, perceived as <i>non-deserving <\/i>to belong in the hegemonic nations which later swallowed the states and their institutions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:5.0pt; text-align:justify; margin:0in\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\">The totalitarian movements were greatly influenced by the hegemonic understanding of the nation, a result of the need for fast and secure &ldquo;<i>shelter after the storm<\/i>&rdquo;. In that totalitarian stage, Roma were direct victims. <b>Roma, not fitting the hegemonic image of the nations, were destined to two potential scenarios: <\/b>to be forcefully assimilated in the nations, or, in the extreme culmination, to be &ldquo;<i>cleaned from the face of the earth<\/i>&rdquo;. Due to the fact that it was hard for Roma to fit the image of the hegemonic nations (because of their cultural diversity, travelling past, and mobility) <i>assimilation <\/i>was the harder option; therefore, the Nazi regimes chose the easier option<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"line-height:13.75pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"> &ndash; <i>complete elimination<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-right:5.65pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin-left:5.0pt; text-align:justify; margin:0in\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\">To sum up, the place of Roma in the transformation of Imperialism to Nationalism, and Nationalism to Totalitarianism, made them a stateless (&ldquo;<i>homeless<\/i>&rdquo;) population which was hard to be assimilated in the hegemonically built nation-states (&ldquo;<i>shelters after the storm<\/i>&rdquo;). This position of Roma (non-deserving and non-belonging) in the rapidly built hegemonic nation-states caused <span style=\"letter-spacing:-.05pt\">the<\/span> <span style=\"letter-spacing:-.05pt\">realization<\/span> of the <b>Nazi plan to eliminate everybody who did not fit the image of their nation<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\">For the end I would send one message:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0in; margin-right:5.65pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; margin-left:5.0pt; text-align:justify; margin:0in\"><span style=\"font-size:11pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,serif\"><i><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\"><span style=\"line-height:150%\">Assimilating or eliminating people who do not fit the hegemonic images of the nations are fatal and inhuman solutions. Let us think about a third option: dehegemonizing and transforming the nation-states into multicultural countries, and instead of assimilation and elimination let us think about healthy integration!<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0in;
