A NOVEL DEDICATED TO “DEALING WITH THE PAST”
Dina Greenberg’s trauma-informed writing, research, and teaching gives voice to survivors of war, displacement, and sexual violence. Nominated for The Pushcart Prize, Best Small Fictions, and The Millions, her publications include NERMINA’S CHANCE, a novel that begins in 1992 Bosnia.
After her family is murdered and she is raped by Serbian soldiers, Nermina Beganović’s only chance of survival is to flee her Bosnian homeland to the United States. Alone and traumatized, Nermina embarks on a quest to re-create the family she has lost to war. Though a work of fiction, the book gives voice to Bosniak survivors who have long remained silent.
Integral to the novel’s platform, Ms. Greenberg seeks to provide safe spaces for refugees/survivors, in which to tell their stories. Last summer, she presented portions of the novel to students at (forumZFD partner) Most Mira’s annual conference on Peace-building in Kozarac.
She is currently at work on an interview series, entitled “Women of the Bosnian Diaspora,” whose focus is intergenerational trauma.
