Project entitled ”Mapping Detention Camps/Detention Facilities” in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the period 1992-1995
In May 2013, the association ”Centre for Democracy and Transitional Justice” (CDTP) from Banja Luka and the association ”Transitional Justice, Responsibility and Remembrance in Bosnia and Herzegovina” (TPOS u BiH) from Sarajevo started working on a project entitled ”Mapping Detention Camps/Detention Facilities in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the period 1992-1995”, the goal of which is to conduct empirical research in cooperation with former detention camp detainees and associations of detention camp detainees and use facts established by courts, document the existence of detention camps, number and names of killed detainees and tortures applied at detention camps and other detention facilities.
During the preparation phase in May 2013, a questionnaire for interviews with former detention camp detainees and data gathering on detention camps, prisons and other detention facilities was drawn up. After this, a research team headed by the project coordinator was established.
The team was tasked with the creation of a total of 15 profiles of detention camps and other detention facilities by the end of 2013. In 2014, the research team headed by the project coordinator developed additional 150 profiles of detention camps and other detention facilities. During their project work, researchers conducted 358 interviews with former detention camp facilities. The results of their work were presented during press conferences held on February 25, 2014 and February 26, 2015 in Sarajevo.
The project was financed in 2013 by the organisation Civil Rights Defenders, which also financially supported CDTP in the creation of the web site of the association and purchase of work equipment (a multi-functional copy machine, dictaphone and camera). In 2014 and 2015, the project was financed by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Civil Rights Defenders and Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The profiles may be found on the web sites of both associations.
